Metrics details. Lepidosauria lizards, snakes, tuatara is a globally distributed and ecologically important group of over 9, reptile species. The earliest fossil records are currently restricted to the Late Triassic and often dated to million years ago Mya. As these early records include taxa that are relatively derived in their morphology e. Brachyrhinodon , an earlier unknown history of Lepidosauria is implied.

However, molecular age estimates for Lepidosauria have been problematic; dates for the most recent common ancestor of all lepidosaurs range between approximately and Mya whereas estimates for crown-group Squamata lizards and snakes vary more dramatically: to Mya. This uncertainty restricts inferences regarding the patterns of diversification and evolution of Lepidosauria as a whole.

Here we report on a rhynchocephalian fossil from the Middle Triassic of Germany Vellberg that represents the oldest known record of a lepidosaur from anywhere in the world. Reliably dated to — Mya, this material is about 12 million years older than previously known lepidosaur records and is older than some but not all molecular clock estimates for the origin of lepidosaurs. Using RAG1 sequence data from 76 extant taxa and the new fossil specimens two of several calibrations, we estimate that the most recent common ancestor of Lepidosauria lived at least Mya — Our origin time for crown-group Squamata coincides with shifts towards warmer climates and dramatic changes in fauna and flora.

The “exquisitely preserved” remains of a million-year-old reptile have been found in the United States, rewriting “the known evolutionary timeline”, the New Mexico Museum of Natural history says. The museum made the announcement this week, saying the unique structure of the skull, jaws and teeth of the reptile indicate it was an herbivore, and such specialised plant-eating was not previously known in reptiles older than about million years.

The bones were part of an “exquisitely preserved but incomplete skeleton”, the museum said in a statement. Paleontology curator Spencer Lucas and his team from the museum determined the bones were about million years old, meaning the reptile lived during the early part of the Permian Period, or more than 50 million years before the origin of dinosaurs.

Dr Lucas and research associate Matt Celeskey identified the skeleton as belonging to a new genus and species that they named Gordodon kraineri. Gordodon is derived from the Spanish word gordo, fat , and the Greek word odon tooth , as the species had large pointed teeth at the tips of its jaws. The species name kraineri honors Karl Krainer, an Austrian geologist who contributed to knowledge about the Permian period in New Mexico.

It was believed to have been a selective feeder on high-nutrient plants due to the advanced structure of its skull, jaws and teeth. Experts at the museum said other early herbivorous reptiles were not selective, chomping on any plants they came across. They said Gordodon had some of the same specialisations found in modern animals like goats and deer.

Megalania refers to an extinct giant goanna or monitor lizard , [1] recognised as either Megalania prisca or Varanus priscus. They were part of the megafaunal assemblage that inhabited southern Australia during the Pleistocene. The youngest fossil remains dated to around 50, years ago. The name Megalania prisca was coined in by Sir Richard Owen to mean “ancient great roamer”; the name was chosen “in reference to the terrestrial nature of the great Saurian”.

The close similarity to the Latin word: lania feminine form of “butcher” has resulted in numerous taxonomic and popular descriptions of Megalania mistranslating the name as “ancient giant butcher. Owen introduced the genus Megalania to accommodate the species Megalania prisca.

The temperate South American lizard genus Liolaemus is the one of the most widely distributed and species-rich genera of lizards on earth. Owing to a lack of reliable fossil data, previous studies have been forced to use either global molecular clocks, a standardized mutation rate adopted from previous studies, or the use of geological events as calibration points. However, simulations indicate that these types of assumptions may result in less accurate estimates of divergence times when clock-like models or mutation rates are violated.

We used a multilocus data set combined with a newly described fossil to provide the first calibrated phylogeny for the crown groups of the clade Eulaemus , and derive new fossil-calibrated substitution rates with error of both nuclear and mtDNA gene regions for Eulaemus specifically. Divergence date estimates for each of the crown groups and appropriate rate estimates will provide the foundation for understanding rates of speciation, historical biogeography, and phylogeographical history for various clades in one of the most diverse lizard genera in the poorly studied Patagonian region.

If you’re interested in something niche – whether that’s flat earth conspiracy theories or Dungeons and Dragons – there’s probably a dating.

From Tinder to Grindr, hooking up to settling down, the options for finding love or at least sex seem limitless and overwhelming. But by applying a bit of game theory — where mathematics is used to understand interactions between independent decision makers — we may be able to think through our choices in a clearer, or at least more logical, way. The strategies that we adopt in our real-life relationships can be explained, according to game theorists, by computer models that predict how to get the most from your interactions with others.

But, like with all human behaviours, a complicated mix of toing and froing means the best strategies often go in and out of fashion. Game theorists have shown that if two people knew their relationship would be short, they were more likely to cheat. If, on the other hand, the relationship had no forseeable end, they tended to cooperate.

Game theorists have been applying their work to relationships for decades. Political scientist Robert Axelrod popularised some early experiments in his book Evolution of Cooperation. However, applying theoretical computer models to complicated human interactions is imperfect when the models might not be realistic enough. This forced game theorists to incorporate more complicated decisions, such as whether we maximise our chances if we date only one person at a time, or several people simultaneously.

Find out why we might be set for a new sexual revolution. Within the biological sciences, John Maynard Smith proposed a variant called evolutionary game theory. Specifically, they look at what kinds of relationship strategies a species develops — for example, do they have a single, multiple or fluid number of partners?

Here, I combine previously underutilized models and priors to perform more biologically realistic phylogenetic inference from morphological data, with an example from squamate reptiles. When coding morphological characters, it is often possible to denote ordered states with explicit reference to observed or hypothetical ancestral conditions. Using this logic, we can integrate across character-state labels and estimate meaningful rates of forward and backward transitions from plesiomorphy to apomorphy.

Despite this, the phylogeny of Squamata remains contentious. Total-evidence analyses using combined morphological and molecular data and the MkA approach tend toward recent consensus estimates supporting a nested Iguania.

Researchers from China University of Geosciences announced Tuesday that they have discovered a fossil of an extinct genus of lizard dating back about million years in northeast China.

Different from previous discoveries in the same area, researchers found remains of a large crawfish in the lizard’s stomach, including cheliped, a broken pereiopod and tentacles, which look like today’s crawfish.

Researchers from China University of Geosciences announced Tuesday that they have discovered a fossil of an extinct genus of lizard dating.

This ancient reptile was an archosaur — part of the same group that would later include dinosaurs, pterosaurs and crocodilians. Scientists recently discovered a partial skeleton of the lizard dating to million years ago, a time when Antarctica was bursting with plant and animal life. Not only does the fossil of this former “king” provide a sharper picture of the forest landscape in long-ago Antarctica, it also helps to explain the evolutionary landscape following the biggest mass extinction in Earth’s history, scientists reported in a new study.

Though the lizard fossil was incomplete, researchers were able to tell from the fused vertebrae that the animal was an adult reptile, and it likely measured about 4 to 5 feet 1. They dubbed it Antarctanax shackletoni : The first part of its name comes from the Greek words for “Antarctic king;” the second part is a nod to pioneering British polar explorer Ernest Shackleton , who named the Beardmore Glacier — where many Antarctic fossils, including Antarctanax , have recently been found — following an expedition in Subtle features in the bones of the lizard’s spine and feet indicated that it was a new species, and its foot shape suggested that it lived on the ground, scampering over the forest floor, lead study author Brandon Peecook, a Meeker Postdoctoral Fellow at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, told Live Science.

Those trees might be hard to picture if you imagine Antarctica as it is today: a frozen, mostly lifeless, ice-covered desert. Roaming among the trees and rivers were amphibians, mammal relatives called cynodonts , other mammal-like predators called dicynodonts that had tusks and beaks, and reptiles like Antarctanax , he added. But this fossil also contributes to an important evolution story. With the discovery of this previously unknown ancient reptile, researchers are piecing together the unexpected archosaur diversity that arose shortly after the Permian mass extinction — a cataclysmic event about million years ago that wiped out around 96 percent of all marine species and approximately 70 percent of terrestrial vertebrates.

Scientists previously thought that after that global extinction event, it took many millions of years for animals to diversify and fill the planet’s empty niches. But Antarctanax shows that archosaurs began diversifying within just a couple of million years after the Permian extinction, according to the study. While Antarctanax ‘s iguana-like body may not seem especially dramatic, some Triassic reptiles evolved to soar through the skies as pterosaurs, while others returned to the seas and eventually evolved into enormous ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs — and their ancestors were likely emerging at the same time as Antarctanax , he explained.
