The “exquisitely preserved” remains of a million-year-old reptile have been found in the United States, rewriting “the known evolutionary timeline”, the New Mexico Museum of Natural history says. The museum made the announcement this week, saying the unique structure of the skull, jaws and teeth of the reptile indicate it was an herbivore, and such specialised plant-eating was not previously known in reptiles older than about million years.
The bones were part of an “exquisitely preserved but incomplete skeleton”, the museum said in a statement. Paleontology curator Spencer Lucas and his team from the museum determined the bones were about million years old, meaning the reptile lived during the early part of the Permian Period, or more than 50 million years before the origin of dinosaurs.
Dr Lucas and research associate Matt Celeskey identified the skeleton as belonging to a new genus and species that they named Gordodon kraineri. Gordodon is derived from the Spanish word gordo, fat , and the Greek word odon tooth , as the species had large pointed teeth at the tips of its jaws. The species name kraineri honors Karl Krainer, an Austrian geologist who contributed to knowledge about the Permian period in New Mexico.
It was believed to have been a selective feeder on high-nutrient plants due to the advanced structure of its skull, jaws and teeth. Experts at the museum said other early herbivorous reptiles were not selective, chomping on any plants they came across. They said Gordodon had some of the same specialisations found in modern animals like goats and deer.

The temperate South American lizard genus Liolaemus is the one of the most widely distributed and species-rich genera of lizards on earth. Owing to a lack of reliable fossil data, previous studies have been forced to use either global molecular clocks, a standardized mutation rate adopted from previous studies, or the use of geological events as calibration points. However, simulations indicate that these types of assumptions may result in less accurate estimates of divergence times when clock-like models or mutation rates are violated.
We used a multilocus data set combined with a newly described fossil to provide the first calibrated phylogeny for the crown groups of the clade Eulaemus , and derive new fossil-calibrated substitution rates with error of both nuclear and mtDNA gene regions for Eulaemus specifically. Divergence date estimates for each of the crown groups and appropriate rate estimates will provide the foundation for understanding rates of speciation, historical biogeography, and phylogeographical history for various clades in one of the most diverse lizard genera in the poorly studied Patagonian region.

But, like with all human behaviours, a complicated mix of toing and froing means the best strategies often go in and out of fashion. Game theorists have shown that if two people knew their relationship would be short, they were more likely to cheat. If, on the other hand, the relationship had no forseeable end, they tended to cooperate.
Game theorists have been applying their work to relationships for decades. Political scientist Robert Axelrod popularised some early experiments in his book Evolution of Cooperation. However, applying theoretical computer models to complicated human interactions is imperfect when the models might not be realistic enough. This ancient reptile was an archosaur — part of the same group that would later include dinosaurs, pterosaurs and crocodilians. Scientists recently discovered a partial skeleton of the lizard dating to million years ago, a time when Antarctica was bursting with plant and animal life. Not only does the fossil of this former “king” provide a sharper picture of the forest landscape in long-ago Antarctica, it also helps to explain the evolutionary landscape following the biggest mass extinction in Earth’s history, scientists reported in a new study.
Though the lizard fossil was incomplete, researchers were able to tell from the fused vertebrae that the animal was an adult reptile, and it likely measured about 4 to 5 feet 1. They dubbed it Antarctanax shackletoni : The first part of its name comes from the Greek words for “Antarctic king;” the second part is a nod to pioneering British polar explorer Ernest Shackleton , who named the Beardmore Glacier — where many Antarctic fossils, including Antarctanax , have recently been found — following an expedition in Subtle features in the bones of the lizard’s spine and feet indicated that it was a new species, and its foot shape suggested that it lived on the ground, scampering over the forest floor, lead study author Brandon Peecook, a Meeker Postdoctoral Fellow at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, told Live Science.
